Every barn has horses and instructors. So what makes one different from another?
For us, it starts with a fundamental belief that riding is a full experience rather than being just about technique. While the horse world constantly changes around us, Chestnut Hill has stayed committed to timeless riding principles because they work.
Our philosophy is rooted in respect: respect for the horse, respect for the rider, and respect for the process.
We don’t rush progress. Instead, we focus on building strong foundations because we know that confidence in the saddle starts with understanding the reasoning behind each skill.
At Chestnut Hill, we prioritize doing things safely, thoughtfully and with care. Every moment spent here is designed to develop not just your abilities in the saddle, but your bond with the horse beneath you. We approach every rider as an individual, meeting you exactly where you are in your riding journey and helping you to grow at a pace that feels right for you. Our goal is to create an environment where you feel supported and inspired to keep riding.

At the center of everything we do is a commitment to the well-being of our horses.
From the way we care for them to the way we teach you to communicate with them, every decision we make is guided by what’s best for the horse. They’re not just animals we work with. They’re our partners.
This philosophy has naturally created a community of like-minded riders. Parents trust us with their children. Adults return to riding in a patient, supportive environment. Boarders know their horses are looked after as if they were our own, with every detail of their care handled with the utmost attention. Everyone here understands that good horsemanship takes dedication, and that’s exactly the way it should be.
Chestnut Hill Stables is a place where riders of all ages and levels come together to share their dedication to fine horsemanship and find a community that is committed to supporting each other and putting the wellbeing of horses and riders above everything else.
Our Grounds & Facilities
When Trina French first stood on this raw piece of land decades ago, she saw more than just 86 acres of Hudson Valley countryside. She envisioned a place where every detail would serve a purpose, where the layout would make sense for both horses and humans, and where beauty and function would work hand in hand to create an extraordinary experience for riders.
Located at 430 Kerley Corners Road in Tivoli, Chestnut Hill sits perfectly between Routes 9 and 9G, making it easy to find from Rhinebeck, Hudson, or Kingston. But convenience was just the beginning. Trina designed every aspect of these facilities from the ground up, drawing on her years of equestrian experience to create intentional spaces that work seamlessly in practice.
Our barns are carefully planned environments where horses remain calm and handlers can work efficiently.
Wide aisles allow horses to pass each other calmly. Stall placement ensures good ventilation and natural light. Every detail, from the positioning of water buckets to the layout of the tack rooms, reflects decades of knowing exactly what makes barn life run smoothly.
Our riding facilities tell the same story of thoughtful design.
The indoor arena gives you a consistent place to work year-round, while the outdoor ring offers varied training conditions to develop your skills further. Beyond the rings, 80 acres of fields and wooded trails wind through the property, offering riders the chance to develop balance, conditioning and confidence.
The cross-country course evolved organically, shaped by the land’s natural features.
Rolling hills build fitness and open stretches allow for galloping. Carefully maintained jumps challenge horses and riders without overwhelming them. It’s a course that feels as natural as it is intentional, blending seamlessly into the scenic landscape.
For our boarders, the 24/7 turnout areas aren’t afterthoughts squeezed into leftover space.
They’re generous paddocks with proper drainage, sturdy fencing and run-in sheds positioned to provide shelter from both summer sun and winter winds. Horses live as horses should live here, with freedom to move and graze naturally.
